Eline Spreekt

Eline Spreekt turns an iPad into a full speech computer: a grid of tiles with icons, pictures or photos, and every tile speaks when you touch it.

Two Eline Spreekt leaflets: a young user and a carer with the iPad, and an exploded drawing of iPad, waterproof case and bumper

The audio can be recorded by parents and carers themselves, or spoken automatically by the iPad.

The app serves one purpose only — giving people who cannot speak a voice, as simply as possible — so the design had to get out of the way.

App design

I designed the interface together with the developers, the users and their carers. A deliberately plain, flat design, using the iPad’s touchscreen, microphone, camera and photo library.

Tiles

To make the app as intuitive as possible we developed tiles for navigating categories, and speech tiles inside each category. Behind them sits a set-up mode in which parents and carers build their own pages and tiles.

Identity

Besides the interface I designed the identity — logo, leaflets, stationery and the website — and directed several photo and video shoots, including a television item for national broadcaster SBS.

The app won Best Mobile App at the Digital Communications Awards in Berlin, 2017.
