Magnetism

The theme of the Supreme Court's 2008 annual report was the growing influence of European law on Dutch law. The concept started with a question from physics: how does a small force relate to a larger one?

Physical forces

The first result was a sketching process: research into forces such as centrifugal force, gravity, magnetism and counterforce.

Sketch: a small body in the orbit of a larger one
Sketch: two forces pulling on each other
Sketch: a large force deforming around a smaller one

Magnetism

The force that fitted the concept best was magnetism. I visualised it with iron filings and a series of magnets of varying strength: pour the filings on a thin plate, hold a magnet underneath, and all kinds of shapes appear. Photographs of those shapes run through the report.
